Scotland has a distinct natural beauty any month of the year, but if you are aiming to visit without having your umbrella up the whole time, then Scotland in August is one of the best times to make a trip here. Part of the UK but very much a country with its own strong identity you'll be heading into the stuff of legend and history amongst rolling green hills in the south around Edinburgh to the magnificent mountains of the highlands. We all know Scotland is famous for it's Lochs, but until you see the mirror stillness of a Loch first thing in the morning it's hard to appreciate the sheer breathtaking splendor of one! If you happen to like golf you've come to the home of golf with the best golf courses in the world and hosts of the 2014 Ryder Cup. It's probably going to be a warm sunny 20°c / 68°f but is often higher, however it's also probably going to have some light rain on some days too, how do you think it stays so green? The most visited city is Edinburgh, drawing people to it's famous castle, monuments and festivals. Scotland Reviews > UK destinations >

    Tenerife - Canary Islands

Tenerife in August will be simply sizzling at 27°c / 81°f. It's the largest of the Canary Islands and incredibly popular. Yes it has beaches, yes it has amazing nightlife and yes it's choice of hotels is endless, but it also has it's very own volcano! Don't worry, it's currently dormant but certainly makes for an exciting visit to this natural wonder. There's plenty more to Tenerife aside from it's fabulous holiday atmosphere, enjoy the animal and sea park of Loro Parque or take a tour of the island to discover some of it's treasures such as the famous Dragon tree!  Best Island in the Canaries >  Canaries Reviews >

You may want to consider a cruise around the Canaries instead?  Some of the ships are truly magnificent and its a whole new exciting way to holiday, with so many choices of restaurants and entertainment, as well as plenty of things for the kids to do. Germany for an August Holiday? Ok probably not the first on your list of european countries for a beach holiday, but if you've done a lot of beach holidays and are looking for new and interesting places to Holiday, you won't go wrong with visiting Germany in August. Of course Germany has dramatic landscapes so weather will vary, but you can hope for around 25°c / 77°f and upwards. It's a wonderful time of year to enjoy the much visited Black Forest, or the Bavarian Alps. The cities of Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich amongst a whole host of fascinating cities mixing the modern with a wonderful blend of architecture dating back to medieval times with fairytale castles and inparticular the Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. If it's beaches you must have then up in the North East, Germany boasts secret white beaches along the Baltic Sea which welcomes millions of visitors in the summer. Enjoy a log Cabin perched next to one of Germany's sparkling lakes, or the very best modern 5 star glamour of a city hotel in some of the cleanest cities in Europe. European Destinations >

Majorca is often a sizzling 31°c / 88°f  in August. Fly into Palma and transfers to pretty much anywhere in the island are fairly short although the shortest transfers times are to the southern beaches. Roads are great so if you are heading north your transfer is only likely to be an hour or so and well worth it. With an ambience all of it's own this is a very welcoming island with everything you need for a great holiday destination in August. Majorca holiday reviews >

    Madeira and Portugal

Ever considered Madeira in August? It's a fairly small island just 22 kilometres wide and 57 kilometres long belonging to Portugal but lies closer to the North African coast than Portugal. Famed for it's sub tropical climate, calm and warm all year round it's an ideal location for growing some of the worlds most beautiful flowering plants and is one of the main attractions on Madeira. It may be sub tropical but there are no dangerous spiders and snakes that would normally accompany such a climate, so you can relax in sunshine and snorkle just off the shore in around 27°c / 81°f heat. With plenty of good quality hotels and great flight options this makes an excellent alternative to the Canary Islands or Balearics. You'll even find a bit of late night partying and similar to mainland Portugal the nightlife doesnt get started until the early hours, so it's easy to avoid if you are looking for peace and quiet. Definitely a great romantic holiday getaway! Portugal mainland is just as popular as ever with the Algarve probably the biggest tourist destination due to it's incredible beaches. Yet again another Greek island makes the grade for top summer holidays in August if you are looking for a Mediterranean holiday. Quaint villages to thumping nightlife, ancient history to luxury hotels, awash with myth and legend to busy sizzling beaches. We don't hear much about Slovenia as a summer holiday destination, but situated inbetween Italy and Croatia, it's fairly easy to get to and has so much to offer! Slovenia in August will likely reach 27°c / 81°f, perfect weather for hanging out on it's pretty mediterannean beaches. It only has just over 25 miles of coastline, and prestinely maintained beaches surrounded by villages with an air of the Italian influence of its neighbour. If you aren't going to get the chance to visist Slovenia often then a visit inland is a must. It's capital Ljubljana is just an hour or so from the coast and a beautiful city with a small town feel on the river, with plenty of shopping, cafes, restaurants and little out door eating stands offering up local specialities and beer. You'll see the mountains in the background, normally packed with skiers in the winter season, but enjoy the summer alpine scenery and head out to enchanting Lake Bled. Just 20 minutes from the coast you can explore Slovenias fascinating network of caves, an awesome spectacle, and one of the main attractions being Postojna Cave. St Petersburg, Russia

In the west of Russia, the maritime city of St Petersburg is most popular with tourists in August. So, if you have ever been curious about this captivating city then August is the month to go! The previous 2 months have had daylight for around 18 hours a day when the sun does go down well after midnight, meaning the city doesn't stop and becomes almost a 24 hour city with plenty of partying, but by August this has calmed down as the daylight hours shorten and the locals head out of town on their own holidays. So the crowds are gone and the queues are gone making it a pleasant visit. It will be a balmy 20°c / 68°f or so and quite humid, but you are unlikely to escape without some of it's well known rain showers. Visit the palaces, see the fountains, visit the parks, take a boat trip, just be sure to check that the institutions you want to visit are open when you are there, as some close until September. Enjoy a taste of Russia with a cosmopolitan twist. European Destinations >

It's not hard to find somewhere hot to go in August, but you have to be aware of weather patterns around the world and Cyprus is at it's most sweltering and Dry in August and for some people the best month of the year to visit Cyprus - ideal for sun worshippers and busy nightlife. Upto 33°c / 91°f, in August and sometimes higher it's one of the busiest months of the year. Cyprus Reviews >

One of the three Balearic Islands off Spain, Menorca is a fantastic choice for a Mediterranean holiday in August.  It's a lot smaller than it's neighbour Majorca, but with many more beaches and some of them truly spectacular its definitely a must visit. It has a slower pace than both Majorca and Ibiza, so great for family holidays and quiet romantic couples holidays. The water is fabulously warm for swimming in August and is a big draw for its visitors, plenty of watersports are on offer. On land Menorca's history goes well back and even has pre-historic monuments, so take a short tour to get to know the personality of this holiday island and an insight into its surprisingly exciting history. Just because it's laid back, it doesn't mean it's devoid of nightlife, search out it's famous cave bar and nightclub perched on the cliffs for a magical setting. Enjoy 30°c / 86°f heat in one of our favourite top spots for a European beach vacation. European Destinations >

    Italy - Le Marche

The Le Marche region of Italy is an exquisite holiday destination. Pronounced Le Marchay, the area is situated in central Italy sprawling down to the east coast of Italy. With a mixture of long golden beaches and sandy coves amongst the cliffs. Many people stay in rented villas and cottages throughout the region, and it is certainly handy to hire a car to get around the place unless you are staying in a hotel close to the beach. Drive amongst the pretty vineyards and better yet take a wine tasting session to experience some of the best local wines. This will be a holiday for exploring, relaxing and dining in the peaceful hills and walks on the beach. Enjoy temperatures around 27°c / 81°f and less tourists even in this peak season than its neighbouring Tuscany. Italy Reviews >  European Destinations >

What better time to visit the Emerald Isle than in August! It's summertime in Ireland and the long summer evenings make the perfect back drop for enjoying its fine traditional pubs and gardens to the tunes of traditional Irish music.  County Kerry on the West coast, boasts some of the prettiest beaches of long white sandy beaches and breath taking scenery. And at an average of 19°c / 66°f it may not be tropical but its mild sunny days and low rainfall make August one of the best months to visit Ireland. You'll also find some really traditional pubs in County Kerry, often with their original features making it feel like you are stepping back in time! The oldest pub in Ireland is thought to be in Dublin, along with some of Irelands best entertainment, shopping and sightseeing, but step outside of Dublin off the normal tourist trail to really taste this land of myth and legend in it's true sense. Visit villages, castles, farms and just feel the heritage oozing through it's pretty houses. UK destinations >

Barbados in August is still a popular month to visit, so don't let the hurricane season deter you too much when it comes to Barbados. Due to the location of Barbados being the furthest island in the East and also one of the very southern islands it means that it's very rarely in the Hurricane path. Many talk of Barbados being outside the hurricane belt, and statistically the chance of a Hurricane hitting Barbados would be every 25 years, if that. Hooray! So yes, you'll get a few downpours, usually in the afternoon for an hour or at night, other than that you'll have steamy hot days of 31°c / 88°f. A friendly happy island made up of a fascinating heritage which can be seen throughout this sugar cane carpeted island, dotted with colonial buildings and rum huts! But its sun kissed beaches, and that crystal clear warm water creates that vision of a laid back holiday destination we all want to be sipping an iced cold drink in. Barbados Reviews >

Beautiful little Tobago is one of our top recommended Carribean destinations throughout June to November, due to the fact that it sits outside of the Caribbean hurricane belt. So it's a really great choice for a Caribbean island in August. Tobago in August will probably be a whopping 32°c / 90°f! Being much closer to the equator and very easterly hurricanes don't tend to form in this area. So Tobago would be one of our top recommends for a holiday destination if you can't resist the Caribbean.

If you've been thinking of a holiday in the Caribbean in August and are worrying about it being the hurricane season then you can stop worrying and choose a dream holiday in Aruba in August.  Sunny Aruba is outside of the hurricane belt perched north of the South American coastline in the warm Caribbean.  Less known than than the other Caribbean Islands it's not one of those expensive Islands like Martinique or Grenada, it's thoroughly accessible, just a little bit further on the plane if you are coming from Europe. China is very hot in August, even in the North. Be prepared for it to be quite humid in the south and even around 35°c / 95°f and higher, but if you like it hot then this will be a great time of year for you to visit China. Being such a vast country it's not a country that can be covered quickly, so choose a region and take a tour to get the most out of your holiday in China. One of the most popular tourist destinations of course is a trip that includes the man-made wonder of the Great Wall of China, and another firm favourite is a trip through the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River. Thailand in August is a mixed bag, you can visit all year round and it's pretty great, however this month the best of the weather is in the Gulf of Thailand and particularly Koh Samui and it's surrounding islands. We have the choice of some of the best places to go in August as the hot weather opens up most European destinations as great choices for a holiday, but if you have been to many of these typical European resorts you may be thinking of somewhere new, and Morocco will fit the bill for weather, beaches, intriguing cities, great food and an altogether exotic holiday destination. However it will be hot, very hot! It's typically around 31°c / 88°f but the last few years has recorded up to 37°c / 99°f in August. Morocco Reviews >

    Cape Verde

Its very hot in August in Cape Verde, reaching its peak temperatures somewhere around the 31°c / 88°f mark. A great alternative to Egypt if you are looking for somewhere new, albeit more famed for over-water pursuits such as windsurfing than underwater pursuits. But it has some great new hotels, a serene and quiet ambience and just perfect for one of those holidays where you literally just want to relax in the sun and do nothing!! In years to come this will be the Canary Islands biggest rival so visit now while it's still un-spoiled. Placed and hour or so south of the Canaries by air, it's off the West African coast and the latest new and exciting holiday destination.

    Florida - The Keys

Florida in August is the hottest time to visit, it's going to be about 32°c / 90°f on the Keys! And although pretty much any time of year is a good time to visit Florida, if you are looking for some serious sunshine, Ausgust is the month to find it. Although we would typically recommend April as our favourite month to visit the sunshine state as this is well outside hurricane season, August still gets it's droves of visitors despite the fact that it is in hurricane season. You are likely to get a great deal, and the chances are you may not be affected at all by the hurricane season. Tour operators are well aquainted with the season and are flexible with their holidays in storm times, so buy a package rather than separate flights and hotel so that you are fully protected should you need to be. Famed for its delicious fresh seafood, the keys offer some fantastic restaurants which get packed so think ahead and make a quick reservation the day before. Of course the reason why people come here? Paradise beaches and coral reef. USA Destinations >
